JAKE COBAIN is the Young Adult Librarian. He is a small man, wiry and muscular, with a thin mustache that curves along his cheerful mouth. He tends to talk too much and too fast and he's full of enthusiasm for teenagers and all things "YA." He loves rock 'n' roll, everything from the Beatles to Marilyn Manson. It was his idea to stage a "Battle of the Bands" in the library parking lot.
LISA DION is the Children's Librarian. While she prefers country music to rock 'n' roll, she thinks giving teenagers something to do in the summer is a very good idea. She has argued about rock 'n' roll with Melinda Carey and would have loved to have been on the committee, but wasn't invited.

IAN DURITZ is 16, but small for his age. He can't play an instrument or sing a note to save his life, but he helped organize a "Battle of the Bands" for his private school. He has been very outspoken at the committee meetings about what to do-and not to do. And he convinced everyone that they should listen to audition tapes at the meeting. He admires Ms. Carey's "vast musical knowledge." KAY ETHERIDGE is 15 and has short, straight blond hair. She is not in a band, but does play a pretty funky piano. She knows a lot of rock 'n' roll trivia and loves to turn her poetry into songs. She's close to her parents, who expect her to excel in everything. Kay was irritated that Ms. Carey barely clapped after she played one of her songs on the library's piano at the last committee meeting.

DANNI O'CONNOR is 16 and the drummer in the heavy-metal band Eekwall Choyce. She's athletic and strong with her hair parted into long, spikey braids. She didn't want to be on the committee at first, but she loves bugging Ms. Carey ("the old fossil") and is now enthusiastic about the "Battle of the Bands." TROY VEDDER is 16, long-haired and good-looking. He's the lead guitarist and singer in Eekwall Choyce. He respects Danni's "mondo" talent on the guitar, but thinks girls should be more feminine, like Kay. He is energetic
and often frustrated by the slow pace of the committee meetings.

BRENDA JETT has long dark hair that almost covers her face when she plays bass guitar in her band, Stella Cooks. She's 15 and quiet except when her instrument is in her hands. Her band has only been together for four months and she admits, "We're not very good," but she and her boyfriend Ron, the frontman, love their band and (she says, blushing) each other. RUTH HYNDE is a librarian who is not on the committee, but approves of the "Battle of the Bands" and has offered her expertise. She has not kept up with modem rock 'n' roll, but met her husband of over twenty years at Woodstock. She loves older rock and once wrote a magazine article on "Lyrics as Poetry in Punk Rock Music."

The Newscaster

The Chief Detective

LUKE PETTY is tall, curley-haired and only 14, but has already written songs his own country rock band Sheepdog performs to wild applause. He has offered a harder, darker song, "Kill Joy," to Troy for Eekwall Choyce to play. He is more, patient about the meetings, feeling things should be "done right," but even he was angry when Ms. Carey suggested that more security guards be hired "to protect against the hooliganism most certain to occur."
