The police are investigating the crime.

THE VICTIM

MELINDA CAREY was the music librarian at the Beech Tree Public Library. She had masters' degrees in both music and library science and was a trained violinist and pianist. She organized piano recitals and a jazz series for the library. She was the reluctant chairwoman of the "Battle of the Bands" committee since even as a teenager she felt that rock 'n' roll was "a collection of loud vulgarities and as such the enemy of civilized culture."
