Year End Research Project

English 10 – Mr., Taylor

One theme that unites our year has been that of “Finding Identity,” particularly as that search involves someone who is outside of the mainstream society and so must struggle more than others who are merely trying to work out how he or she fits in to the status quo.

We will spend the week from May 19 – May 24 using reference resources to explore the establishment of the African American identity in this country by exploring several historical people and events….

  • Malcolm X
  • Martin Luther King & Civil Disobedience
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson
  • The Harlem Renaissance
  • Brown vs. Board of Education
  • George Washington Carver
  • Chicago Ghettos – Mies van de Rohe
  • Stephen Foster – Slave songs
  • W. E. B. DuBois
  • Rosa Parks – bus boycott
  • Richard Wright
  • Integration of Armed Forces
  • Slavery in Connecticut
  • Voting Rights
  • Integration of Athletics

… all answering the question “How has this person/event/topic contributed to the formation of the identity of the African American.”
